Sectorial Case Study
"An Army of One"
That may seem like hyperbole, but picture a keypad interface on an outdoor kiosk, exposed to all weather conditions, UV, and contact with chemicals, jet fuels and oils. That keypad is a lonely sentinel at a remote and foreboding outpost!
The existing keypad uses piezo technology, which is durable but expensive. GGI International is challenged to provide a cost-reduced model, with consistent tactile feedback, hermetic sealing, chemical resistance and an ability to fend off abuse.
The GGI process begins with a Project Leader being assigned to lead the mission. Time lines and milestones must be met and within the budget. All your requirements are reviewed methodically, and material and design recommendations are carefully considered. A testing plan is formulated, as well, to ensure all critical aspects will be validated before keypad #1 is shipped.
In this case, the solution offered is a magnetic switch with a tough vandal-resistant layer. A 3D model is developed by GGI International's in-house Design and Engineering team, using SolidWorks, to ensure all mechanical details are achievable and the hermetic sealing can be assured. Crisp tactile feel will be guaranteed even if operated by a user wearing heavy gloves. Our Electrical Designer strategically maps out the circuit pattern and shielding required to protect the unit. This solution is presented to you for the design approval and prototypes order. Upon delivery of these, a six-month field test is begun.
Today, several thousand of these GGI International assemblies are in the field, weathering the elements and the test of time. Two additional programs are underway for this client using a similar design.
